1.False! Cleopatra is commonly portrayed as not only a plain jane, but as one with a big nose. Cleopatra's personality is really what charmed her suitors.

2.True. It was a custom in Egypt for king and queen to be husband and wife, and also siblings to each other. D:

3.False. Ptolemy died in battle shortly after Caesar had restored Cleopatra and his power in Egypt. I don't think they had a chance to get married.

4.True. Mark Antony had invited her to come to see him in Tarsus in Asia Minor...after mulling around the city, Antony came to her, and fell for her shortly after. They went back to Alexandria as lovers.

5.False. Cleopatra stayed in Egypt while Antony married Octavian's sister in an attempt to keep the peace(Octavian's had begun to gather more power) and she made Egypt's economy stronger and upped its defenses.

6.True. Antony and Cleopatra combined their fleets together, but were overpowered by Octavian's ships.

7. Cleopatra committed suicide, it was dramatic because she may have let the venomous bite of an asp kill her, or die via poison she kept constantly near by in times of desperation.

1. Most historians agree that it was Cleopatra's great physical beauty that charmed her many suitors. This is false because she was plain looking. What attracted her suitors was her charm and her character that "put all those who associated with her under her spell".

2. Cleopatra's first husband was also her brother. This is true because it was Egyptian custom that king and queen were brother and sister.

3. Cleopatra's husband, Ptolemy XIII, was executed by Caesar shortly after Caesar married Cleopatra. False; he was killed in battle and I don't think Caesar and Cleapatra married.

4. Following Caesar's death, Cleopatra and Antony became lovers. True; she believed that Rome's/Egypt's future was in Antony's hands so she went to Tarsus and impressed/seduced him.

5. Being the skillful negotiator that she was, Cleopatra made a treaty with Octavian giving her complete power in Egypt. False; she was left to his mercy and he did not succumb to her charms.

6. After the Roman senate stripped Antony of his political power, he and Cleopatra combined forces to fight Octavian. False; there was nothing about fighting him but they did flee to Alexandria where they killed themselves.

7. How did Cleopatra die and what made it a dramatic death? She killed herself with what some say was an asp or cobra. What made it a dramatic death was the fact that people believed she had an asp bite her breast (slow, painful death) for the pain of losing her lover. Plutarch and evidence indicates that she probably had a cobra bite her arm for a quick death since she was knowledgeable on what would've been best

This is true. Cleopatra needed another powerful Roman in order to achieve her ends, so she waited until the struggle for power after Julius Caesar’s death was apparently over and then pursued the man who came out on top.
5. Being the skillful negotiator that she was, Cleopatra made a treaty with Octavian giving her complete power in Egypt.
This is false. Cleopatra already had control of Egypt. She was officially married to her younger brother, Ptolemy XIV, but she kept power away from him.
6. After the Roman senate stripped Antony of his political power, he and Cleopatra combined forces to fight Octavian.
This is false. Octavian was the one who attacked. He led his army against the combined forces of Antony and Cleopatra, not the other way around.
7. How did Cleopatra die and what made it a dramatic death?
Cleopatra died of a poisonous snake bite, probably from a cobra. It was a dramatic death because Mark Antony had already committed suicide, and Octavian was on the way to take Cleopatra as a prisoner of war. It is possible that she used poison that she stored in a hollow comb instead of a self-induced snake bite, but the snake bite is the most commonly accepted and told theory.

1.Most historians agree that it was Cleopatra's great physical beauty that charmed her many suitors.I think that this statement it false because Cleopatra was a plain person and not of great beauty. Also because her portraits show that she has a sensitive mouth, large eyes and a surprisingly huge mouth. The thing that charmed her many suitors is that she had an irresistible charm along with a peculiar force of character that pervaded her every word and action and many would fall under her spell.

2.Cleopatra's first husband was also her brother.
Yes I believe this statement is true because it was a custom in ancient Egypt that the king and queen were brother and sister as well as husband and wife.

3. Cleopatra's husband, Ptolemy XIII, was executed by Caesar shortly after Caesar married Cleopatra.
This statement is incorrect because Caesar didn’t execute Ptolemy the fourth. What happened was that Ptolemy was killed in battle.

4. Following Caesar's death, Cleopatra and Antony became lovers.

Yes when Caesar died they became lovers because Antony invited Cleopatra to come for a meeting at tarsus in Asia Minor . She didn’t go up to him so he came to her and she was able to seduce him.

5. Being the skillful negotiator that she was, Cleopatra made a treaty with Octavian giving her complete power in Egypt .
This statement is false because she didn’t make any treaties with the nephew of Caesar.

6. After the Roman senate stripped Antony of his political power, he and Cleopatra combined forces to fight Octavian. Yes this is true but they didn’t win so they escaped to Alexandria , but it was all over because Antony killed himself.

7. How did Cleopatra die and what made it a dramatic death?

She died by committing suicide since Octavian did not succumb to her charms. So instead of being carted to Rome as a prisoner she committed suicide. It was a dramatis death because Cleopatra was a woman who had a power and wouldn’t give up so some people don’t really know what the reason she committed suicide was.

Kylie,
Good job at answering the last question, but i have to say that in the article they stated that she was too clever to have a venom that caused long agonizing death come to her. It said that actually, she was smart about it and used a snake that would make it quick and painless.

Donna,
You also answereed the last question very good, but i cant exaclty agree it was all in the name of love, but it was more that she would never be brought in as a slave.
