The Significance of the Hellenistic Era

What made the Hellenistic Era important?

The Hellenistic Era was a major turning point in trade and craft. A cultural and economic bond was formed through out the region that lasted through the political instability (6th paragraph, article). During the Hellenistic Era, new trade routes were established, and the economy was strong (pg.188, 1st paragraph). The earliest form of federal government was formed during this period (pg. 189, 9th paragraph). The huge amount of gold and silver earned by the Persians was melted down and turned into a standard coin (pg. 190, 2nd paragraph). Trade was also encouraged by lowering border security to make it easier to pass goods (pg.190, 3rd paragraph).

What made the Hellenistic Era important? 5 Facts from the book

Paragraph 6: What made the Hellenistic Era important were the accomplishments that happened after the Greco-Macedonian army was formed. For example, trade was improved because the city states were no longer independent to other cities. The descendents of the Greek and Macedonian conquerors gained an economic and cultural bond through ruling in a professional class together as merchants and soldiers. Also, one of the most important cities of this era, Alexandria, was founded and became an important center for learning and commerce. Alexandria also had a library that held the great achievements of that time.

Paragraph 7: Though most women had no part in public life, some were given the opportunity to be a part of intellectual activities or commerce.

Paragraph 8: A final fact I'd like to state to prove my point is that many achievements in scientific and theoretical knowledge also occured due to the new schools and communications between areas.

Book facts:

1. New practices of farming were used, such as using iron tools, expanding irrigation, and introducing new plant species. pg.190, column 1, paragraph 4
2. Trade increased due to lower political barriers and sailors traveled to new lands so they began to trade with places like Spain for silver, wince and cattle from Italy, etc. pg. 190, column 1, paragraph 3
3. The Greek city-states formed leagues, showing the earliest signs of Federal Government. pg. 189, column 2, paragraph 6
4. Libraries and museums were being constructed in cities to store works written in an international
dialect, koine. pg. 191, column 2, paragraph 3
5. Scientists also made great discoveries in math and astronomy like how the planets revolve around the sun and that the earth is round. pg. 196, column 2, paragraph 2

The Hellenistic era was important for many reasons. The Hellenistic cities were the centers a trade and craft industry (6). In these very cities, the descendants of GrecoMacedonian conquerors became a professional class of rulers, soldiers and merchants (6). Alexandria became the most prominent center of commerce and learning (6). Alexandria's library became the depository for recording many of the literary and scientific achievements of the time (6). The Hellenistic period blended imperceptibly into the roman era (10).

What made the Hellenistic Era important? Mention at least 5 facts from the book.

The Hellenistic Era was important because trade increased, and different civilizations had more contact with each other. This new contact inspired the spread of ideas and the formulation of new ones, making it a time of learning and discovery. Many of the ideas formed during this period became important parts of western civilization, even up to the present day. Great works of art, such as the Winged Victory of Samothrace, Old Market Woman, and Gaul Chieftain were produced during this time as well. Architecture flourished, as seen in the lighthouse at Alexandria and the Altar of Zeus. Some old customs did remain, such as the insubordination of women and the use and ill treatment of slaves; but overall, it was a time of prosperity. Even when the Hellenistic Era faded away, many concepts formed during its reign lived on.

One thing that made it important is that even though cities weren’t independent they were the centers of trade and industry and the descendants in the cities became a professional class of rulers which provided cultural and economic bond through area. On paragraph 6

Another thing is the city of Alexandria became the most prominent center of commerce and learning. It also had a library which became the depository for recording many of the literary and scientific achievements of the time. On paragraph 6

Something else that made it important that the name derives from the fact that Greek culture spread in the area in the last three centuries before Common Era. On paragraph 5

Also is that the era is noted for its scientific achievements, and the increase in theoretical knowledge didn’t lead practical applications.

During the Hellenistic era, great expansion a cured. After Sargon took over cultural diffusion took place because of the mix of people from different areas. Cities became the centers of trade and craft during the Hellenistic era.
