The Socratic method summery Socrates applied his methods to examine moral concepts. The method is negative truth seeking (getting rid of every thing that isn’t true). This helped people bring out their beliefs and help them understand things better. Some casual principles of the teaching are the teacher must the topic of instructions, and the student must agree. The student must try to answer the question being asked. The teacher has to accept a correctly reasoned answer, and the process must be considered more important than the facts. The Socratic method is in essence teaching by asking questions and not just giving answers. The answer is found by getting rid of the false answers, using questions and inquiries. The Socratic method is used to further your understanding of a topic, or prove it right or wrong. Every fact is carefully analyzed to determine if it is true of false and has reasoning behind it. All errors found will be eliminated. The Socratic method seems to ask alot of questions but never give any answers. You have to look for the answers yourself. When a teacher is teaching a student he will accept any answer if the answer has solid reasoning behind it. Identifying facts and being logical is useful in the Socratic method.
THE SOCRATIC METHOD The basic idea of the Socratic Method is that the students discover the truth on their own. The Socratic Method is a popular teaching technique today.
The Socratic Method is a method of examining something to distinguish between what is true and false. It is a test of logic formulated from questions to help people discover the answer/truth to something. This is also the only classic method of teaching that will teach students to think for themselves. This method is based on reasoning and convincing rather then a plain true fact. For instance, as long as a person gets to their point with logical reasoning, it is considered correct, even if the statement is really false. The trick is to have a logical chain that backs up the information.
Socrates said that it was the key to examining the virtues of the time, piety, wisdom, temperance, courage, and justice. He also said that he was ignorant but it was better then being ignorant and still saying that he is knowledgeable because he basically believes that everyone is ignorant.

The Socratic Method was used to examine key moral concepts. It is said to be a negative method of truth-seeking because by asking questions he (or anyone who uses) examines can find underline meanings in ones opinions. This was a technique that coincides with the fact that he believed that a good teacher could teach students to learn for themselves instead of feeding them knowledge. It’s similar to the saying… Give a man a fish and he eats for a day… But teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime. If you teach a student to think for themselves they are forced to shape their own opinions. The Socratic Method is basically a “group of questions that are basically tests of knowledge that can help with the understanding of a certain/ specific topic. Some philosopher’s believe in this and other’s do not. But Socrates believed that a life that was not examined was not worth living.
The Socratic Method was a method that was supposed to find truth, but in a negative way. The article says that truth is found by identifying and eliminating that which is not true, so that means they examine what you say and judge you as either true or false by using a series of questions and tests of logic thats supposed to help discover the truth. So basically, they would eliminate all of the wrong answer to find a really good answer to the topic at hand. This method is also used by teachers when they are teaching in a classroom environment. The crucial principles to that form of teaching are for the teacher to set the topic of the discussion, the student must agree to try to answer the teachers questions, the teacher must be willing to accept any correctly-reasoned answer, and the teachers must expose the students reasoning error. This method is very apparent in classrooms even in present day. -Alejandro Potter
The Socratic method was basically a way to make students think critically and logically. The teachers, though, had to be quicker-wittd then them. I believe that it also makes students examen why they believe something. If they can't support it, then maybe they odn't truly believe it, so this helps the students weed out beliefs that were maybe put in their brains by someone else. The teacher can not claim to be perfect, as the student can correct them, in a respectful way. I think the Socratic method was a very good way to make people think for themselves and truly believe the point they are trying to make.

The Socratic method of teaching is basically giving students questions instead of answers. It involves questioning the purpose or goal and the very nature of whatever is being examined. The entire concept was to teach by making students think for themselves rather than create a mini-version of the teacher, like the Sophists would do.
In this article they said that the Socratic method was a negative method of truth-seeking. The way it works is by slowly eliminating wrong answers through the thought process. It described how a good teacher can help students think for themselves instead of telling them the answers so that they don't become robots. According to th article this is the only classic method of teaching that is known to create original thinkers. The article goes on to list 5 principles to this form of teaching. This method challenged moral beliefs. This article concluded by saying that Socrates professed his ignorance, he claimed that "wealth does not bring goodness, but goodness brings wealth and every other bleesing, both to the individual and to the state". -Genesis Quinones
The socratic method is basically the teacher ask the student(s) questions, instead of just giving them the answer. This helps them develope a good way to think logically for themselves on their own. This is proving that you not only just know the answer but you also understand it. Principles to teach this method: - The teacher must set a topic of instruction and the sudent must agree to it. - The student must agree to attempt to answer questions from the teacher. - The teacher must be willing to accept any correctly reasoned answer. That is, the reasoning process must be considered more important than the facts. - The teachers needs to be able to come up with questions to try to basically "stump" the students' thinking. - And remember teachers can make mistakes also.
The socratic method was a negative method of truth-seeking. The truth is found by the process of elimination, in which they identify that which is not true and get rid of it. The basic form of this method is a series of questions which are formed to test the logic and facts to help us discover the truth about any certain topic. The principles for this type of teaching are: *The teacher must set the topic of instruction and the student must agree to it. *The student must agree to attempt to answer questions from teh teacher. *The teacher must be willing to accept any correctly-reasoned answer. But the reasonin process must be considered more important than facts. *The teacher's questions must expose errors in the students reasoning. But the teacher must reason more quickly and correctly than the student, discover errors in the student's reasoning, and then formulate a question which the students can't answer except by a correct reasoning process. To perform this service, the teacher must be very quick-thinking about the classic errors in reasoning. *If the teacher makes an error of logic or fact, it is acceptable for a student to correct the teacher
n my own words the Socratic method is basically a method used for truth-seeking. It uses the process of elimination to eliminate what is false, so we can find the truth. It asks logical and factual questions to help further people's understanding of things such as their beliefs. Socrates is credited for making the scientific method which we know today. But, Aristotle states that this method cannot be applied to ethics.
Also using this method teachers can get students to think for themselves and become involved with their learning. But, there where some principles/rules to follow:
1) Teacher gets to pick topic and students have to agree 2) Students have to try and answer questions from the teacher 3) The teacher has to accept any answer, with reason. So reason was more important than facts. 4) If the Teacher makes a mistake the students can correct them
This method is also good for discussion, because it helps the student understand better if they can find the answer (w/ reason) rather than getting an answer from an authority. Socrates used his method with the key moral concepts/virtues of his time: piety, wisdom, temperance, courage, and justice. What made Socrates (who was known as wise) so different from others of his time was that he "preached" his ignorance while others, who were ignorant, preached their knowledge. Lastly here are some of Socrates quotes:
"Wealth does not bring goodness, but goodness brings wealth and every other blessing, both to the individual and to the state."
The Socratic method is a way to find the truth by eliminating whats false. Teachers could teach their students with this method by accepting any answer that was reasoned well enough. The students would also correct the teacher if they were to make an error of logic. The teacher should then lead the class into a group discussion. You could say any process of through-going questioning as an instance of the Socratic method.
The Socratic method places reasoning above fact. A teacher using the Socratic method would teach students by asking questions that challenge their moral and other beliefs. The teacher's goal would be to recognize axioms (beliefs or veiws that subconsciously influence a person) and either validate or invalidate them. According to the Socratic method, students are allowed to challenge teachers' reasoning, and teachers are required to think quickly in order to challenge the students' reasoning. The teacher's questions are supposed to be designed to expose errors in the students' reasoning. The students and teacher were also supposed to agree on a topic of instruction.
Socrates himself used his method to challenge piety, temperance, wisdom, courage, and justice; the main moral concepts of his time. He called himself wiser than others because he proclaimed his own ignorance, whereas others proclaimed knowledge.
Basically the method got rid of the false things. The method also had the students fend for themselves when it came to questions. The teachers were like the ones that we have today. They asked us questions to try and get the right answer. The education rights are like today. The teacher can participate and correct the teacher if needed. It was more important to get the student to participate more than the student getting the right answer. But if the student does give a semi correct answer with some good reasoning it is cosidered correct.
The Socratic Method is a bad way of figuring out the truth. You find out what’s true by getting rid of the obvious wrong answers and finding out what answers is correct. The Socratic Method finds assumptions that can affect your opinion of something. They say this is the only way to have “anonymous thinkers. Any type of questioning can be considered the Socratic Method. The Socratic Method was started by Socrates who claims that he knows his own ignorance.
The Socratic Method was first described by Plato in the Socratic Dialogues. This was his most important contribution to Western thought. The Socratic method is regarded as the father and fountainhead for ethics or moral philosophy. The Socratic method is a negative method of truth-seeking by identifying and eliminating the things that are not true. The Socratic method is a search for the underlying assumptions which may shape someone’s opinion and to make them the subject of inquiry to determine their truth. They find the truth out by giving a series of questions formulated as tests of logic and fact to find the truth out about that certain topic. Socrates applied his method to the key moral concepts at the time; piety, wisdom, temperance, courage, and justice. Such an examination of the key moral values challenged the moral beliefs of the person. This method was to help further their understanding and help define their beliefs.
The idea of the socratic method is to find truth in things by going through and eliminating all that cannot be true until you have the answer. The Socratic method relies on the participance of the student in this aspect because according to this method the student has to agree with the teacher to folow and answer the line of questioning that would follow. This brings about a new way of teaching where the teacher is teaching the student to think for themselves without the forcing opinion of another. The teacher must also comply with some things in this method too. The teacher must be willing to accept any answer that the student puts out without any argument. When you use this method the teacher is trying to show by a line of questions all of the flaws a student makes in the students debate or reasoning. This is a method that socrates believed to largely help students in the aspects of personal beliefs and morals. -Caben
The Socratic Method was known as the method of enquiry which he applied to the examination of the key morals and concepts of that time. This method is somewhat like the process of elimination finding what is not true. And by finding things that may change there opinion unconsciously or form there opinion unconsciously. This is a test about seeking to characteristics to discover the truth. But Aristotle claimed this method was not suitable for ethics. By using this method the teacher can teach the student how to think for themselves. The teacher and student must agree on the topic they talk about, the student must be an active listener and participate. So with just those answers I believe that this method says that the student and teacher must be at the same level the student willing to learn and the teacher willing to teach. - Allison Linner
The Socratic method is when the teacher asks questions instead of just giving their students the answers. This is helpful to the students, because they learn to become critical thinkers and not just believe what authority has to say. This is also helpful, because if they did not have the socratic method then everyone would be basically brainwashed by the leader of the City-State. The way to use the soratic method is that the teacher must set the topic and the students have to agree to the topic. When the student asks a question the teacher does not answer they instead ask another question. In this way the students can learn more than if they were just told the answer.
The Socratic method or the method of elenchos is a method used to find the truth through slowly eliminating what is not true. The method is a search for axioms to shape someone's opinion. One series is a series of questions that test logic and fact to help people find some truth about a subject. On a more broad spectrum any thorough questioning can be considered an example of the Socratic method. The teacher had to accept any answer a student gave if it was correctly reasoned. The student was also allowed to correct the teacher if they made an error in their facts or logic. He applied this method to such morals as piety, wisdom, courage, justice, and temperament. This challenged the beliefs of different people bringing out inadequacies that lead to aporia, or puzzlement.
Comment to Genesis Quinones: I liked that you put your summary into your own words, it helped me understand the article a little better than before. Good job!
Comment to Savannah Smith: I also liked that you said how if a student couldn't support a belief then they don't truly believe in it.
The socratic methodis a method of inquiry, it is largly applyed to the examination of key moral concepts. IT is a negative method of trouth-seeking, whish means that he eliminates all the false things, and it searches for underlying assumptions which shapes our opinions. it is basicly a a series of logic questions to discover the about something. To teach this method the teacher sets the topic, the student attempt to answer the questions, the teacher accepts any correctly reasoned answer, and the teacher has to find out where the student thought wrong. One can loosely lable any throughgoing questioning as the socratic method. Socrates said that being aware of self's ignorance is better then not knowing what you're talking about.
The Socratic method was a big step forward in thinking. It is because of this that Socrates is considered the “father of moral philosophy.” The Socratic method was a “negative method of truth-seeking,” and it states that truth is found by eliminating untrue things. The basic way to do this is to make questions that are intended to be tests of fact and logic so that a person can discover the truth about the topic in question. Aristotle said that this method was the basis of the scientific method.
Talented teachers can use this method to teach students to think for themselves. But in order for that to work, they must be willing to attempt to answer questions about a topic of instruction that they agree to. Also if the teacher does not get his/her facts straight while teaching, the students should be allowed to correct the teacher. And if the students are wrong, that is where the teacher comes in to correct the students. It seems that this method was against pure lectures. This method is where Socrates got the quote, “life without examination is not worth living.” He said that to be proven wrong about something is better than to actually do something wrong. -Matt Hinkel
The Socratic Method is a method of truth seeking by identifying and getting rid of what is not true. Socrates taught students to questions their beliefs and morals, rather than telling them what to believe in. One way he helped people discover what they believed is by a serious of questions that helped a person discover the truth about some topic. The method of mathieutics was a method designed to bring out the definitions in the persons beliefs to help them further their understanding. Some principles that a skillful teacher must follow in order to teach students to think for themselves include:
- teachers must set the topic for instruction, and the student must agree. - the student must try to answer the question from the teacher. - the teacher must be willing to accept any correctly- reasoned answer meaning the response process must be considered more important than facts. - the teacher's questions must expose errors is students readings. The teacher must reason more quickly and correctly than the student and discover their mistakes in their reasoning and then create a question that a student cannot answer except by correct reasoning process. - if a teacher makes a logical or factual error, a student may correct it.
Socrates applied his method to examine key morals suck at piety, wisdom, temperance, courage, and justice. This challenges the moral belief of interlocutors and puzzled them. Socrates claimed that ' wealth does not bring goodness, but goodness brings wealth and every other blessing, both to the individual and the state. He also claims that ' life without examination is not worth living.' I believe that life without examination is not worth living because without really knowing what you believe in, there's no point in living because you don’t know what you are living for.
The socratic method is a way of teaching that a teacher uses for his students. this method of teaching is a way of eliminating the possibilities, until there is only one left. There is many agreements between the student and his teacher, the teacher will tell what they will discuss, student must answer questions, teacher accepts corectly reasoned answers, and students can correct teachers. I think this is a great way of teaching, it allows both the teacher and the students to participate, and even encourages it. I like how the method encourages reasoning in your answer, you can't just give a random answer that you coppied from somebody else.
The Socratic method is something in which lies are found in someone’s life and sorted out, so there are only the truths remaining. The teacher starts asking one of his pupils a series of questions and this will help them think for themselves amongst others. The teacher must be willing to accept any answer the student gives, and then “critique” it. This technique is believed and used by some philosophers but not others. Over all I think the Socratic method is a good way for people to sort out their moral dilemmas by themselves. - Jeffery Oard
Socrates was most well known to westerns for the Socratic Method. Said to be the "Father of ethnics", or just philosophy. His method of teachings is much different because he finds the truth by eliminating the parts if the stories that are already proven otherwise. In his teachings you use logic, not opinions, then the truth will be better and not biased. Some teachers can teach their students this method by simple principles of teaching, and the teacher must except everyone's (reasoning) point of view on the topic given, and may question why. Socrates himself was ignorant, and his students learned from that, and he tried to shape it. "Life without examination is not worth living" "Its better to be wronged than do wrong"
(famous quotes by Socrates)
~~Kylie Rose Smith~~
(Sorry I got home late today... so I did this as soon as I could)
Socrates is said to be the father of ethics and moral philosophy, and therefore philosophy in general. Socrates’ method of teaching involved students answering questions asked by a teacher. The student must not only have the correct answer, but more importantly must correctly reason this answer. The teacher must find errors in the student’s reasoning and correct them. A discussion works well for this method. Socrates looked at morals a lot, and brought out inadequacies. He thought that to be wronged is better than to do wrong.
Using the socratic method teachers taught students to think for themselves because the teacher let them find out things for themselves. Some of the main parts to this method were: the students must at least try to answers questions asked by a teacher. The teacher had to accept any answers that had some reason or proof behind it because the process of finding an answer out is more important than the answer itself. The students could also correct the teacher if they made a mistake. Socrates also said that if you were wronged it was better than doing something wrong yourself.
The Socratic Method or also called the method of elenchus. It is a method of truth seeking. It is about someone asking questions and the students would answer and would be able to hear opinions or thoughts of other students. Through this method teachers can teach their students to think for themselves, and not just give away answers and the kids accepting the answers without question. Even though the students have a different opinion. This method has crucial principles. The first one is that the teacher must set the topic of instruction and student must agree. Second one is student must attempt to answer question from the teacher. Third the Teacher must accept any correctly reasoned answer. Fourth teacher must expose errors in the student’s reasoning. Last thing if teacher makes a mistake, it okay that a student corrects teacher.
To Maria Gonzalez, your summary was interesting, you had informational facts.I liked how you added the list of guidelines to follow.
To Eskira Kahsay, you had a lot of facts about the Socratic method, and it is noticeable that you read the article and put a lot of thought into and summarized every single thing in the article and you even included quotes of Socrates.
Sophia Ball Your's was the first one so I thought I would comment on it =P. It seems as if You have actually read and it isn't too short or too long it's jus right and the information is good. Nice job [.!]
Maria Gonzalez I like how you used the same information as everyone else but made it seem like the information could be slightly different by using your own words. Good Job.
Brittany Burrstra Good information. not too long Good job .!
Whitney: I liked how you answered this in your own words...and the part of teaching a man to fish it fit really well. Good Job!
Brittany B: Your answer was short, simple, and to the point. It was also written in a manner where it hit all the key points of the article. Nicely Done!

In your own words, summarize the Socratic Method.
The Socratic Method was used to examine key moral concepts.
Whitney Burney

Tiffany Kilts
The socratic method is basically the teacher ask the student(s) questions,
instead of just giving them the answer. This helps them develope a good way to
think logically for themselves on their own. This is proving that you not only
just know the answer but you also understand it.
Principles to teach this method:
- The teacher must set a topic of instruction and the sudent must agree to it.
- The student must agree to attempt to answer questions from the teacher.
- The teacher must be willing to accept any correctly reasoned answer. That is,
the reasoning process must be considered more important than the facts.
- The teachers needs to be able to come up with questions to try to basically
"stump" the students' thinking.
- And remember teachers can make mistakes also.
-Aaron Reames
The socratic method was a negative method of truth-seeking. The truth is found by the process of elimination, in which they identify that which is not true and get rid of it. The basic form of this method is a series of questions which are formed to test the logic and facts to help us discover the truth about any certain topic.
The principles for this type of teaching are:
*The teacher must set the topic of instruction and the student must agree to it.
[-APRiL CASSiTA-]
n my own words the Socratic method is basically a method used
for truth-seeking. It uses the process of elimination to eliminate
what is false, so we can find the truth. It asks logical and factual
questions to help further people's understanding of things such as
their beliefs. Socrates is credited for making the scientific
method which we know today. But, Aristotle states that this
method cannot be applied to ethics.
Also using this method teachers can get students
to think for themselves and become involved with
their learning. But, there where some principles/rules
to follow:
1) Teacher gets to pick topic and students have to agree
2) Students have to try and answer questions from the teacher
3) The teacher has to accept any answer, with reason. So reason
was more important than facts.
4) If the Teacher makes a mistake the students can correct them
This method is also good for discussion, because it helps the
student understand better if they can find the answer (w/ reason)
rather than getting an answer from an authority. Socrates used
his method with the key moral concepts/virtues of his time:
piety, wisdom, temperance, courage, and justice.
What made Socrates (who was known as wise) so different from
others of his time was that he "preached" his ignorance while
others, who were ignorant, preached their knowledge.
Lastly here are some of Socrates quotes:
"Wealth does not bring goodness, but goodness brings wealth
and every other blessing, both to the individual and to the state."
"Life without examination is not worth living."

-Marshall King

-Sarah Carlson
-Eulices Monterroso

Hanna Shih

Eskira,
Wow great answer. Had enough details and more. Great job.
Sara,
Great use of words.

Brittany- I agree with you on the part where you said " errors will be eliminated" When i did mine i didnt think of it like.

Sophia: I liked your postition on the negative truth seeking.
